God of the Angel Armies

Ed Cash’s wife had been waking him up in the middle of the night from anxiety and fear attacks. She asked her husband to pray for her and soon after, Ed wrote the lyrics for the song “Whom Shall I Fear?” as a praise to God through the night.  He didn’t know where the lyrics came from but he started praying the lyrics and thought of musician Chris Tomlin to sing it.

In another town, Chris Tomlin had an urging to meet up with Ed since they hadn’t worked on any music for a while so Chris sent Ed a message that he wanted to meet up when he visited Nashville.  Chris Tomlin says “It was the Holy Spirit nudging me.”  And when the two met up, Chris knew he wanted to sing this song. He said, “There’s something powerful about praying to God and praising Him during the night. When things are coming against you, prayer is the answer.”

It was based on 2 Kings 6:15-18: And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. So when the Syrians came down to him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, and said, “Strike this people, I pray, with blindness.” And He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

Excerpts from Chris Tomlin Interview:

Our story is not a story of fear, it is a story of faith. Everywhere you turn it is fear.  Fear is no respecter of age, socio-economic status, or anything. It is a condition of the heart. I just think it is good to have this Truth in our hearts. Whom shall I fear? In the midst of crisis or anything that comes against, it is powerful to know Who stands behind and goes before us. The God of Angel Armies is always by our side.  Most of the time our eyes are focused on what’s in front of us. If we could see the spiritual realm, our enemy wouldn’t cause us fear.

WHOM SHALL I FEAR? (GOD OF THE ANGEL ARMIES)

You hear me when I call
You are my morning song
Though darkness fills the night
It cannot hide the light

Whom shall I fear

You crush the enemy
Underneath my feet
You are my Sword and Shield
Though trouble lingers still

Whom shall I fear

I know Who goes before me
I know Who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always on my side
The One who reigns forever
He is a Friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

My strength is in Your name
For You alone can save
You will deliver me
Yours is the victory

Whom shall I fear
Whom shall I fear

And nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in Your hands
I’m holding onto Your promises
You are faithful
You are faithful
You are faithful

I know Who goes before me
I know Who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always on my side
The One who reigns forever
He is a Friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

The God of angel armies is always by my side
