WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT DRINKING WINE?

Contrary to popular opinion, the bible actually does recommend wine drinking!

The apostle Paul actually instructed Timothy to drink wine for health purposes.

1 Timothy 5:23  Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

Only Nazirites were commanded to not drink wine.

Jesus did not condemn wine-drinking. In fact, at the wedding in Cana, He turned water into wine for the guests to drink.

Jesus himself drank wine. (Luke 7:34a 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking.)

Mark 14:23 Then [Jesus] took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

The bible considers wine as something that gladdens human hearts:

Psalm 104:14-15 (NIV)
14 He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate— bringing forth food from the earth:
15 wine that gladdens human hearts, oil to make their faces shine, and bread that sustains their hearts.

What the bible is against is drunkenness or being controlled by wine that makes a person not aware of what he’s doing or allowing the addictive nature of alcohol to control the person who is then enslaved by it.

Proverbs 20:1 CEV It isn’t smart to get drunk! Drinking makes a fool of you and leads to fights.

Ephesians 5:18 NIV Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit

1 Corinthians 6:12 CEV Some of you say, “We can do anything we want to.” But I tell you that not everything is good for us. So I refuse to let anything have power over me.

2 Peter 2:19 19 They promise freedom to everyone. But they are merely slaves of filthy living, because people are slaves of whatever controls them.

So don’t be afraid to take some wine.  Just not to the point of losing control to it.
