When Fear is Near

No matter how old we get, fear can still hit us.  Fear is one of the natural physiological responses to perceived danger that makes the body release adrenaline to prepare for flight (or fight or freeze). This is for the survival of the species. What does the bible say about fear?
1. The only fear that it endorses is fear of the Lord as the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10a)
2. Fear of man will prove to be a snare (Prov 29:25). It is impossible to please everyone. It is important to please the Audience of One (God) to whom we will account for our actions. 12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God (Rom 14:12)
3. For everything else, God would want us to be freed from fear. Here are some verses to remind us thus:

*Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9).  * Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you (Deut 31:6)* Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the LORD (Jer 1:8)* Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell (Matt 10:28)* So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” (Heb 13:6) * Say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” (Isa 35:4) * So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand (Isa 41:10) * “Hear me, you who know what is right, you people who have my law in your hearts: Do not fear the reproach of men or be terrified by their insults (Isa 51:7) * There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear (1John 4:18a)

Here are some blessings for the persons who fear of the Lord:

Psalm 112: Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in his commands. 2 His children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.4 Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man. 5 Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely, who conducts his affairs with justice. 6 Surely he will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever. 7 He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. 8 His heart is secure, he will have no fear; in the end he will look in triumph on his foes. 9 He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor, his righteousness endures forever; his horn will be lifted high in honor.

Are you afraid of something today? If you are fearing something other than the Lord, that fear is not from the Lord. Let’s ask Him to take away the spirit of fear from our hearts today. 2Tim 1:7 says that God did not give us a spirit that makes us afraid but a spirit of power and love and self-control. May the truth in God’s word release us from the foothold or stronghold of fear. May we make the Lord our stronghold instead.

Isaiah 43 “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. 3 For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.”
