Prov 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
According to the this verse, the starting point of wisdom (good judgment, soundness of decision) is the fear of the Lord. Knowledge without wisdom is just information. As the basic foundation of wisdom, fear of the Lord is key. This is the fear that God endorses.
Fear of God is one of the important criteria for selecting officials with great responsibility. It is an indication that they will serve with integrity.
Ex 18:21 But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
The midwives who feared God and made Him their ultimate authority were blessed.
Ex 1:21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.
Having said that fear of God is important, God’s word also tells us that fear of other things is not from God.
2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
The phrase “Do not be afraid” occurs over seventy times throughout the bible. Here are some of those verses which may encourage you in times when you are afraid of your circumstances or people. When you are remaining in God, there is no one and nothing to fear.
Gen 15:1b “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”
Gen 26:24 “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.”
Ex 14:13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.
Deut 31:8 The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Ex 20:20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”
Lev 26:6 “‘I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no one will make you afraid. I will remove wild beasts from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country.
Deut 3:22 Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.”
Deut 7:18 But do not be afraid of them; remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.

1 Chron 22:12-14 12 May the Lord give you discretion and understanding when he puts you in command over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God. 13 Then you will have success if you are careful to observe the decrees and laws that the Lord gave Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged.
2 Chron 20:15 He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.
2 Chron 20:17 You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.’”
2 Chron 32:7 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him.
Psalm 118:6 The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?
Isa 40:9 You who bring good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, “Here is your God!”
