How Do I Love Thee, Let Me Count The Ways

Singer-songwriter/ Worship Leader, Matt Redman, talks about the story behind the worship song, 10,000 Reasons, in this video:

Story Behind 10,000 Reasons

Taken from Psalm 103 in which the psalmist pours out the multi-faceted reasons to praise God for all that He is and to thank Him for all the great things He does, the lyrics: “Bless the Lord O my soul; all that’s within me bless His holy name” flowed out to Matt Redman, after his friend, Jonas, played for him a melody that the latter had put together.  “I love the psalmist… He’s pouring out all these reasons … Praise Him because He heals all your diseases, He crowns you with love and compassion, He’s redeemed your life from the pit, and [the psalmist] goes and and on and talks about the rule and reign of God and you just can’t shut him up really. Isn’t that how the life of worship’s gonna be?  We’re men to be so conscious of the reasons to praise God…,” explains Matt Redman.

In less than an hour, the song, “10,000 Reasons” was finished!  And in the 2013 Dove Awards, it won Song of the Year.  Matt Redman went on to win “Songwriter of the Year” for the same song at the Gospel Music Association’s 44th annual Christian music awards.  [Read more at this link.]

Lord, today I praise You for all that You are and all that You do. I trust You and know that You do what is best. Thank You for this song that reminds me there are so many reasons to praise and worship You, the Alpha and Omega, The Living Resurrected God.

Here is the whole song:

“10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)”, 2013 Dove Song of the Year Awardee

[Chorus]
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name

The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me
Let me be singing when the evening comes

[Chorus]
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name

You’re rich in love, and You’re slow to anger
Your name is great, and Your heart is kind
For all Your goodness I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

[Chorus]
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name

And on that day when my strength is failing
The end draws near and my time has come
Still my soul will sing Your praise unending
Ten thousand years and then forevermore

[Chorus x2]
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name

Jesus, I’ll worship Your holy name
Lord, I’ll worship Your holy name

Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name
Jesus, I’ll worship Your holy name
I’ll worship Your holy name
