I really liked the 80’s song by Whitney Houston,”Run to You”. It was melodious and romantic. Had I known God’s Word then, the part that says:
Psalm 146:3-4 (NIV)
3 Do not put your trust in princes,
in human beings, who cannot save.
4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on that very day their plans come to nothing.
Jer 17: 5 (NIV) This is what the Lord says:
“Cursed is the one who trusts in man,
who draws strength from mere flesh
and whose heart turns away from the Lord.
6 That person will be like a bush in the wastelands;
they will not see prosperity when it comes.
They will dwell in the parched places of the desert,
in a salt land where no one lives.
7 “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
whose confidence is in him.
8 They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.”
I would have known earlier in life to invest myself heavily in Him first of all. I mean would you invest in a company called Starbux? It almost sounds like a great investment. But when you take the time to read, you would be able to discern that it shouldn’t be a pursuit. Same with God’s Word. If you don’t read you might get a preying instead of a praying woman. Or when you’re just singing along to songs, you might think the things of God are refuse instead of refuge… Almost Truth is not the same as Truth.
Whitney’s song has a namesake by Darlene Zschech. It was in a CD my friend, Emy gave me a while back but I only discovered the song, “I Will Run To You” in 2011 during the lowest point of my life. I loved the lyrics and melody so much I must have played the song a few hundred times since.
The song speaks to me of God’s care. It is a reminder to not worry. His steady, reliable hand of comfort is a source of strength. There is a plea to let His mercy and strength manifest as intimately and as broadly as it needs to. Sometimes I felt like I needed a world-sized volume of strength and mercy both coming to me in the depth of my heart where there was a black hole of pain… as well as going out to people I would need to be merciful to.
The reminder of being called to God’s purpose was a grounding weight to keep me centred on my reason for being, staying, and believing.
Sometimes, life is incomprehensible. But in the realm of God, angels understand. The “drawing of all men” (including me that I don’t turn away from Him during trial, including people who are so far from Him that they would do vicious things) for His glory reminds me that He will glorify Himself, that it is His desire more than mine that no one perish and that everyone come to repentance. And when I ask anything according to His will, it’s already an answered prayer. So I can wait for Him.
The refrain to go back to again and again is Him as the One to run to. Not anyone or anything else. The word “will” is an advanced decision to run to Him regardless of feeling. The anchor to keep me from drifting and getting tossed around are His words of truth. Victory is by His Spirit. A choice is being made that no matter how hard it is to follow, continue on running the race, persevere during trial until seeing Him face to face. And to be able to do that amidst life’s greatest trial would be only by His grace.
The recognition of the spiritual warfare (that the battle is not against people but principalities) was key in fighting the battle not in the flesh but in The Spirit.
Dear Lord, Thank you for using this song to heal me progressively. I believe I am healed today by Your grace. Please help me to remain healed in Your name amen.
I WILL RUN TO YOU by Darlene Zschech
Your eye is on the sparrow
And Your hand, it comforts me
From the ends of the earth
To the depths of my heart
Let Your mercy and strength be seen
You call me to Your purpose
As angels understand
For Your glory may you draw all men
As Your love and grace demands
And I will run to You
To Your words of truth
Not by might, not by power
But by the Spirit of God
Yes, I will run the race
Till I see Your face
Oh, let me live in the glory of Your grace
