A slip of the tongue reveals what we have been storing in our hearts. When something unbecoming comes out specially on unguarded surprise moments, it is a good time to reflect on what we have been storing. The words are the symptoms. The heart is the source.
Everyday, whether we know it or not, we store something into our hearts. Either positive or negative. When the threshold is reached and the heart is nudged more, it will overflow with what was inside through the words that come out of the mouth.
So the slips of the tongue when we are not thinking are a good reminder for us to only keep in what God would have us dwell on and store in it: whatever is good, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable. On the things within our control (such as our duties, God’s commands such as forgive, love, do not dwell on the past, etc.), we ought to do. Those things that are outside of our control (other people’s willfull choices among other things), we can cast (throw forcefully in a specified direction) to God and make them His problem instead of ours.
Luke 6:45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
Dear Lord,
Please remove the plaque buildup in my heart. Please help me maintain good heart hygiene and health. Take away any wrong thoughts, wrong attitudes, wrong motives. Create in me a pure heart that speaks only what You would have me speak. I surrender my entire heart to You so You can filter it and allow to remain only what is from You. Thank You that You have the solution to my heart problem. May the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight in Jesus’s name amen
